WAR!!!!!

We have a friend who is a major Oregon Beavers fan, and, as you may or may not know, Oregon plays BYU in the Las Vegas Bowl this month. Camerons been bugging them about it, and now it's gone farther than we ever thought it could.
We own a light-up Frosty the Snowman, and when we came home from church yesterday, it was holding a sign that said, "Go Beavs!" and was wearing a black and orange necklace. So we, being Smiths, had to get revenge.
That night, we took blue and white streamers, posters, dressed Frosty up in Dad's old football jersey, and headed over to the enemy's base. After decorating, we left and waited for their reaction.
But none came. Nothing happened. So Dad drove by their house to see what had happened.
Frosty was in their house, looking out the front window with a Beavers shirt and hat on! And that's where he is while I type! They've started a war.... More on this later....

Cherokee Legend

Do you know the legend of the Cherokee Indian youth's rite of Passage?

His father takes him into the forest, blindfolds him an leaves him alone. He is required to sit on a stump the whole night and not remove the blindfold until the rays of the morning sun shine through it. He cannot cry out for help to anyone.
Once he survives the night, he is a man.

The boy is naturally terrified. He can hear all kinds of noises. Wild beasts must surely be all around him . Maybe even some human might do him harm. The wind blew the grass and earth, and shook his stump, but he sat stoically, never removing the blindfold. It would be the only way he could become a man!

Finally, after a horrific night the sun appeared and he removed his blindfold.

It was then that he discovered his father sitting on the stump next to him.
He had been at watch the entire night, protecting his son from harm.

We, too, are never alone.
Even when we don't know it, God is watching over us, Sitting on the stump beside us.
When trouble comes, all we have to do is reach out to Him.

If you liked this story, pass it on.
If not, you took off your blindfold before dawn.

Moral of the story:
Just because you can't see God,
Doesn't mean He is not there.
"For we walk by faith, not by sight."

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving has come and gone, and I feel a little heavier than I usually do. But of course, that happens every year. The new turkey recipie worked out fine (luckily) and the stuffing was AWESOME. Sure, I haven't slept in my bed for a few nights, but I'm good with that. Cameron has found his clone- it's funny how much Colton resembles Cameron. Besides his love of garbage cans (aka "yuckies").

This year was the best for shooting pumpkins. I got a few good shots in, we scared all the little kids with the fire shooting shotgun- the usual. But it was actually above 30 degrees this year! And even though it was nice, we didn't necessarily need the fire.

Last but not least, I hear everyone survived Black Friday. No dead WalMart employees- yay! There was, however, a guy who waited outside Best Buy since Wednesday morning. Someone needs a life...

peace out,

LINDSEY

Sometimes I stand there and wonder, "Why does that frisbee look like it's getting bigger?"
And then, it hits me.

Hymn Blooper!!!

The fourth Sunday of every month, I play the organ for sacrament meeting, and this last Sunday was no different. And I had practiced more than usual this month, so I thought I was ready... thought being the key word.
Most weeks, there are no congregational hymns, just the three regulars. Well, lucky me, on November's fourth Sunday, there was a congregational hymn. So I stayed up on the stand during the talks (like I do every organ Sunday) and got ready to dash to the keyboards as soon as the second speaker was done.
All was going well- I made it to the organ on time, got it turned on and switched like I wanted relatively fast, and I turned to page 140. Little did I know that the hymn I was supposed to play was page 241.
I had played the introduction to the hymn, and looked over to the chorister to see when to start. But she gave me a funny look, and I realized I was playing the wrong hymn. I instantly thought, "Oh, page 141." And I played the intro to that. By now there were a few smiles throughout the congregation, and I was pretty frustrated. I couldn't figure out what was going on.
Then, it hit me- 241.
So I just laughed and moved on. And that small little thing got me a ton of comments, and compliments.

Tip for the future: If you ever make a mistake, particularly if that mistake is in front of a lot of people, just laugh and move on. Trust me, it's SO much easier than being embarrassed. ;)

Another totally random thing:
You know how some of the composers or authors of the hymns are "Anonymous", and they abbriviate that "Anon."? I used to look through the hymn book and think, "Wow, this guy 'Anon' really knew how to write!" :D

Friday the Thirteenth

Every Friday the Thirteenth, something bad happens to me. This time was no different...

Dad offered to take me to school today, and of course I accepted. 15 minutes of extra time to get ready? I'm all for that. Anyways, I usually put my shoes on in the car when mom or dad takes me. That way, I have that much more time to do other things. We were running late, so I just grabbed a pair of shoes from my closet and ran out the door. So I'm putting my shoes on, and the first one is fine. But something was bound to go wrong. I mean, it's Friday the Thirteenth, for goodness sakes! As I reached down to tie the other shoe, something went horribly wrong- MY SHOE HAD NO LACES!

ME: AHHH!!!

DAD: What's wrong?

ME: There's no shoelaces on my right shoe!

DAD: Do we need to go back and grab some other shoes???

ME: No, if I'm late I get detention. I'm gonna have to go without laces for the day.

Needless to say, I looked like a dork the whole day. When anyone asked, I had to explain the whole thing all over again. By 6th period, I was pretty ready to go home...

Those poor mallets....

The end of marching band has come and gone, and my mallets have been re-wrapped multiple times. In case you don't know, these kind of marimba mallets require re-wrapping of the yarn around the rubber (playing wears them out). Mine seem to wear out faster than others- I think Mr. Hampton's training of "playing as loud as humanly, or even inhumanly, possible" stayed with me after all these years. Well, three years. My arm muscles are just too strong for those poor mallets... ;)

So in conclusion, here's a wonderful picture of my beautimous pink mallets. I personally like the color, but you can decide for yourself....

New Haircut! ;)

My hair has been the same length for pretty much forever, so I decided to change it. She took about 3 1/2 inches off! I like it, but the first morning I was a little scary.

I woke up and reached up to take my ponytail out like usual. I was shocked to discover that someone had cut my ponytail off in my sleep! It took me a few moments to realize that I had cut it off, and not in my sleep- I just got a haircut. :D

I'll get a picture up as soon as possible- right now I can't find a good one.....

peace out,

Lindsey

New Articles of Faith

I got this in an email- I might have sent it to you, but here it is again:

Articles of Faith of Mormon Culture
1. We believe in SUVs and minivans, as the form of transportation, and in knee length shorts, which are always nice, and in the multilevel marketing.

  • When I saw this first one, I knew it was a great move on my part NOT to delete this email.....

2. We believe that church ball players should be punished for their own fouls, and not for unsportsmanlike aggression.

  • If any of you have seen mormons play basketball, you know this is true. :)

3.. We believe that through bread crumbs, cheese, creamy soups, and rice, all casseroles can be saved through obedience to ward cookbooks and creativity in the mixing bowl.

  • I don't know about you guys, but I've had some weird things at ward potlucks. And what is with LDS people and vegitable jello?!

4. We believe that the first layers and ingredients of the Dip are: first, beans; second, cheese; third, chopped tomatoes; fourth, the gift of sour cream; fifth, olives; sixth, salsa; seventh, guacamole- that is, if you have it.

  • Yet another Mormon barbeque classic.

5. We believe that a Mormon should have a distinguished or a cute name, that it is appropriate to name a child after a church leader or a historical figure including an ancestor, that alternative spellings and French prefixes only add to a name, and that when referring to the names of General Authorities, middle initials should be a part thereof.
  • The last part of this especially true- why do we use middle initials, anyways? Noah didn't have one... And the alternative spellings. Only in the church do we name our children, "Kortnee", "Larisa", "Karise", the list goes on and on. I do understand the ancestor one, though :D

6. We believe in the same wall decor that exists in many Mormon homes, namely, framed family proclamations, vinyl lettering, inspirational word signs, family photos, pictures of temples and Jesus, and so forth.
  • My friend was over here the other day, and she asked why all mormon families have Proclamation to the World and Family Home Evening charts at their house. Then she went and looked at our family pictures. I don't think my family is missing any of the wall decor items!

7. We believe in the gift of the re-gift, church books, crafts, family photos, baked goods, emergency supply kits, and so forth.

  • So true....

8. We believe in sparkling grape juice so long as it is nonalcoholic; we also believe in bringing root beer and sprite to ward parties.

  • Now that I think about it, there is always sprite and root beer at ward paties.

9. We believe in all that we have scrapbooked, all that we will now scrapbook, and we believe that we will yet scrapbook many great and important things pertaining to our family, friends, pets, and vacations.

  • This one made me laugh the most! We Mormons are scrapbooking queens...

10. We believe in the literal mixing of ketchup and mayo and in the generous application of ranch dressing; that CBAs (church-based acronyms) will be used to describe YM/YW, PEC, the Y, and CTR; that Mitt Romney will get Mormons to vote for him any time he runs; and, that the Mormons will enjoy reading Twilight and The Work and the Glory.

  • This, out of all of them, has got to be the most true. Ketchup and mayo- I don't know any non-Mormons out there that do that. CBA's- Why do we have so many acronyms? Mitt Romney- self explanitory. Twilight and The Work and the Glory- Over half the women in our ward have read both multiple times.

11. We claim the privilege of trying to identify common acquaintances with any visitor at church, and allow all other people at church the same privilege, and let them name drop the names of Famous and general authorities how, where, or what they may.

12. We believe in being subject to scoutmasters, pampered chef hostesses, and the writers of the U.S. News and World Report Rankings for professional schools, and in obeying, honoring, and sustaining Glenn Beck.

  • I've heard multiple talks refering to "Brother Beck".

13. We believe in being above average, good at crafts, optimistic, and being fifteen minutes late everywhere we go. Indeed, we may say that we follow BYU football. We believe rumors about famous people joining the church, we hope to meet the three Nephites, we have endured many pyramid schemes, and hope to be able to endure all pyramid schemes. If there is anything cheap, free, sold in bulk, or given away when somebody is moving, we seek after these things.

  • The best one was saved for last. I only know of 2 LDS families that are not BYU fans. I've heard of Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne, Snoop Dog, Brad Pitt, and Kanye West joining the church. And I would venture to guess that about 1/3 of people with Costco memberships are LDS.

Until next time.

Anybody have a cure for sleepiness?

Whoever said high school is tiring- that was a major understatement! I feel like I'm about to pass out!
One contributor- marching band! I know it looks like I'm being payed by the Marching Band Association of America for advertisment, but it's about 3/4 of my life! We have another competition tomorrow, and I'll be gone from 7:30 AM to 12:30 AM. I just can't wait to wake up for church the next morning....
Second contributor- Homework. I HATE HOMEWORK!!!! I heard of a college that doesn't believe in homework- I don't care how much money that might cost, it sounds good to me right now!
Third contributor- Music. Who'd have known that my favorite thing in the whole wide world would make me the most lethargic I've ever been?! Of anything, though, this is the last thing I would throw out! Piano is still amazing, I'm so glad I play it. Teaching is pretty sweet, and it's not as frustrating now that we've been going at it for a while. I've decided that (after I'm done paying for the NYC trip) I'll start saving for a car with the piano lesson money. No doubt I'll have enough!

The other day I was thinking about music and all that good stuff (like usual), and I've decided that I want to play the cello. I know, totally random and very spur of the moment, but I've got a jar going- maybe in a year or two?

One last thing- Does anyone know how to edit music? Or perhaps find radio edits online or something? Let me know if you do!

Peace out,
~Lindsey

Help!

As some of you know, I've been teaching piano for a few weeks. But I have a small problem- 30 minutes of piano just isn't interesting for children of 6 years. Which half of my students are. I need to make things interesting for them, but I really can't think of any games that would be benificial. Does anyone have ideas?
On a different topic, our first marching band competition is a week and a half away. AHHH! The Front Ensemble (or is it Center now?) rehersal was very frustrating last night. Our parts are harder than before (4 mallets, baby), and we're having a hard time listening in. If this keeps up, we're toast!
Anyways, if anyone has ideas for fun musical games, please tell me!

If you need a good laugh....

This is a great video! It's only 24 seconds long, but I don't think I've ever laughed more at a Youtube video before. True, it may be because I know the victim, but it's still an awesome video! Check it out:

P.S.- KaHSdrummer (or whatever the name of the poster is) has 2 or 3 more vidoes of our Marching Band, if you couldn't find them before... His vibraphone version of Claire de Lune is awesome, too.

Blog Numero Uno!

Hello, blogging world! After posting on the family blog, I decided to start my own. Don't worry, I'll still be adding to The Short and Tall of Things, but this will be where I post more often.
Some of you know that I have been in marching band since August. Well, now you can finally see what I've been working so hard at! Go to www.youtube.com and search for "Kamiakin Scarlet Tide Marching Band". Don't pay any attention to the stuff from previous years, but please do pay attention to the 2009 stuff! I'm on the marimba, if you can spot me!
More later...
